The problem with making ethical decisions is you don’t always know you are in the middle of an ethical dilemma. Our speaker spent 33 months in a federal prison for a crime he didn’t knowingly commit because… he had blind spots. What are your blind spots doing to you? We all have numerous blind spots. They are nearly impossible to recognize if we are not looking for them.

A fundamental challenge of our time is lack of ethical leadership. It has been discouraging to see the parade of public-sector officials epitomizing corruption and wrongdoing at the expense of taxpaying public. The breach of trust, brought about by various city, state and federal government officials, continues to fester animosity against governmental organizations. The remedy for public-sector corruption and likely socio-economic ramifications is not legislative controls but leadership values rooted in ethical choices. The essence of a leader is the soul from which character emanates; by successfully harnessing these character virtues, leaders emerge to ensure viability and sustainability of both the organization and society. A comprehensive model is used as the baseline to explore the needs and resulting benefits of ethical leadership. Join us to help build a socially responsible public-sector/professional partnership needed to shape our shared prosperity and regain the public trust!

Learning objectives:

• Learn the ethical leadership model to apply the six virtues to realize the public-sector goal of preserving the public trust and the public good.
• Develop an understanding of why earning and maintaining the public trust is vital for the viability of governmental organizations, and what role accounting and finance professionals play in building that public trust.

Beyond the Code: Ethics in The Real World

This innovative and interactive presentation taps the fields of neuroscience, psychology and even biology to understand the point where science, emotion and critical thinking interact. Instead of critiquing how our minds are supposed to work, we will delve inside the fascinating world of how our minds actually work when we face difficult dilemmas with competing goals. The audience will experience startling, interactive experiments that reveal how we miss the obvious and how our minds conjure up false perceptions out of thin air. We will review why outdated ethical models centered around rule-based codes have failed and what research indicates does improve individual and organizational ethical reasoning.

This session offers a powerful, live EEG demonstration (visual representation of brain activity) allowing attendees to witness the cognitive patterns associated with ethical reasoning.

For non-information technology personnel, cybersecurity can be a labyrinth of strange concepts, acronyms and techno-babble that is at best confusing and at worst terrifying. All of us rely on technical staff to secure our systems and data, and unless you are a trained IT professional, the details of cybersecurity will likely remain something of a mystery. However, a little familiarity with the fundamentals will go a long way. This session will provide a basic understanding of cybersecurity concepts and will empower the personnel who own the data and depend on the systems to better collaborate with their IT staff to ensure the integrity, availability and confidentially of financial data.

Learning Objectives

Participants will learn:

• The principles of the confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA) triad
  • We will review case studies highlighting actual incidents and relate them
    to the CIA triad
• The principles of risk-based security assessment including the elements of
  criticality, threat and vulnerability
  • We will review examples in order to clarify why this is important to the layperson and will explain your role in this process
• What data owners and system users can do to help their IT staff better secure
  their systems
• We will review: 1) what questions you should be asking your IT staff, 2) what
  information you should be providing them and 3) how your business unit can
  work with the IT staff to affect a positive change in your cyber-preparedness

During this webinar, the speakers will highlight a few of the challenges faced during financial statement audits of government agencies and discuss relevant standards and other resources that may be considered in addressing these challenges.
