President’s Message – March 2019

We are winding down the second half of the program year with a busy schedule. Please consider one of our upcoming CPE opportunities.

  • The March lunch meeting will feature the Ice Age Trail Alliance and their trail funding partnerships with state and local government. **This is also our celebration of March is Certified Government Financial Manager month; CGFMs can attend for free!
  • April 10 is an ethics webinar. This is free to the first 35 people who register. Many certifications require annual ethics training and we strive to provide this.
  • May 8 is the Annual Spring Symposium at UW-Madison Union South. The schedule is finalized and registrations are open!

We will be collecting items for the Salvation Army at the March and April training events. See page 9 of the newsletter for more information on items they are looking for. A reminder will be included in the registration confirmation e-mails.

March is CGFM Month! We received signed proclamations from Governor Evers and Madison Mayor Paul Soglin. This year celebrates the 25th anniversary of the certification program.

This Month’s Luncheon Speakers – March 2019

Amy Lord
Outreach and Education Manager

As Outreach and Education Manager, Amy is responsible for promoting the Ice Age Trail and the Ice Age Trail Alliance to a wide audience by leading outreach programs, actively engaging new and existing volunteers and developing Trail-based educational opportunities.

Fun Facts:

  • Amy’s a farm kid from southwest Wisconsin who grew up raising and showing black Angus cattle; back-to-back Grand Champions at the Richland County Fair in 1994 & 1995 (yes, that is a long time ago).
  • She operates a vacation rental farmhouse in Richland County adjacent from her parent’s farm just outside of Gotham where families can get away and enjoy life in the country.
  • Her vacations revolve around fishing, hiking, and live music, like a memorable trip to Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park where besides hiking, she and her husband made sure to see Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers at Red Rocks in Denver.

Kevin Thusius
Director of Land Conservation

As Director of Land Conservation, Kevin manages the Land program by protecting lands for the Ice Age Trail, monitoring Ice Age Trail Alliance easements and managing lands owned by the Alliance.

Fun Facts:

  • First conservation job involved canoeing 100 miles of the Milwaukee River – a pretty cool gig!
  • Published author of 6 scientific papers in esteemed journals such as Behavioral Ecology, on topics like vocalizations in ruby-throated hummingbirds and breeding synchrony in the common yellowthroat.
  • Tends relationships with landowners, maintaining 127 valuable handshake agreements where the Trail crosses private land.

President’s Message – February 2019

Our February lunch meeting is set for February 28 and features an overview of
the recent water rate increases in the City of Madison. Coming up soon, there is a free members-only webinar through AGA National on March 14. This is a great chance to grab 1 CPE on a leadership topic. Register at:

I would like to take a moment to welcome our newest chapter members, those
who have joined this program year. A warm AGA welcome to Patricia McDermott, City of Madison, Ron Aumann, City of Marshfield, Alicia Miller, WI Dept of Financial Institutions, Sylvia Kmiec, UW Madison, Rodney Dole, UW System Administration, and Nickolaus Schuster, WI Public Service Commission.

We are in the final stages of getting the May 8 Annual Symposium schedule
finalized. We plan to send out the final brochure by the end of February.

Next month is March…and that means it is CGFM Month!!! All Certified
Government Financial Manager credential holders can attend the lunch meeting for free. We have a signed proclamation from the City of Madison and are working on the Governor’s proclamation. The CGFM program is celebrating 25 years this year.

Luncheon Speaker – February 2019

Jeff Stanek has been the chief financial officer for the City of
Madison Water Utility since January 2019. His primary
responsibilities consist of the overall financial management for the
utility including oversight of financial reporting, rate-case proceedings
and compliance with accounting and regulatory standards. Prior to
the Water Utility, Jeff was a senior manager with the accounting and
advisory firm, Baker Tilly, for twelve years where he specialized in
providing financial audit and consulting services for public electric,
water and wastewater utilities throughout the United States. He is a
certified public accountant (CPA) and attained his BA in accounting
and finance from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire in
December 2006. In his personal time he enjoys biking, hiking, skiing,
golfing and various other outdoor activities.

We have two training events coming up. January 24 is the Annual Tax Update Luncheon. On February 6 we are hosting the AGA national webinar on GASB updates.

We are in the final stages of getting the May 8 Annual Symposium schedule finalized. We plan to send out the final brochure at the beginning of February. **save the date**
